 Helen Wells is a Tiny Potato. A Tiny
Potato who is also an internationally renowned
Melbourne-based artist, best known for her portrait,
CD/book cover work as well as her tattooing and
ink-works. Helen is deeply connected to both the natural
world (with a focus on animals), as well as the dreaming
and spirit realms. A progressive theme through her work,
is a keen intuitive element that speaks of other times
and often hidden magical worlds.
Drawing obsessively since she had the
motor skills to hold a pencil (2 or 3 years old), Helen
is completely self-taught. Having sold her first
commissioned portrait at 12 years old, she was a bit of
a child prodigy and won many art awards during her
childhood and early teens. After being a dancer,
athlete, circus performer, entertainer, singer, costume
designer, musician and busker for many years, Helen
finally took up her first love of visual arts as a full
time occupation in 2005.
"My work is an exploration into human
nature (and nature as a whole) and the often hidden
beauty within every-one and everything. There is a
trance-like intuitive aspect to how I compose a piece of
work. I have spent much of my life training myself to
see and interpret the world around me in a different way
from most people. I then present what I see as a visual
image so that others can experience it also. I am
fascinated with the world and the deeper meaning behind
it.
I make use of various mediums, but oil
paints are what most people request when commissioning
an artwork from me. Ink and wash is a special love of
mine – I have always had an affinity with line work.
Actually now I think of it, art is a special love of
mine: Sculpture, colours, light, feeling, composition,
story telling - all art.I feel a huge expansion in my
heart when I am creating.
The older I get the more I am able to
create art true to my deeper self – it’s an amazing way
to interact with this glorious world.
